CABLE CAR

Cable Car system inspected and tested by Muni personnel. Reports to General Manager by PHA, EWP and NZ. No known damage to any system or structure. Test cable cars ran with live cable with cable barn truck in protective downhill position. No problems. All reports received by GM by 3:00 p.m. 18 Oct 89. System ready for operation.

However as of 10:00 a.m. 19 Oct 89 there was still no PG&E power to traffic signals and cable car pre-emptes [which trip signal lights to give cable cars the right of way]. Rather than contribute to the confusion of downtown traffic and risk accidents, service was not being restored. Diesel buses are substituted.

Partial service was restored on the afternoon and evening of 19 Oct 89. Flagmen were used at intersections without signals. The California line is still unable to go to the terminal at Drumm Street due to a building demolition.

Full Cable car service was restored on 20 Oct 89.

INJURY AND CROWD CONTROL

There have been no reports of injury or panic by any passengers, members of the public or by Muni employees.

PARATRANSIT SERVICES

Effective 9:00 a.m., 19 oct 89, group van paratransit service has been restored to 40 of 45 social service agencies (the other 5 agencies have not yet reopened). Lift-van and taxi services have Continued at all times without interruption.

FARE COLLECTION

Due to field problem reports from operators and overloading of fare boxes, fare collection was discontinued at 6:00 p.m. 17 oct 89 by General Manager.

Fare collection resumed with start of service on 18 oct 89, however, with the loss of auxilliary power at many of the barns, fare boxes were filling and jamming on 18 Oct 89. GM authorized keeping said equipment in service and not collecting fares.

Normal operation restored on 20 oct 89.
