Palace Hotel, at Market and New Montgomery streets, caught fire on the afternoon of April 18th. Gen. Funston's troops were deployed along Market Street to keep sightseers away and begin dynamite operations.

Rubble from this building was carted away after the Great Earthquake and Fire, and dumped in the Marina area as fill. A new Palace Hotel was constructed and opened in 1909.
