Max Fenner, known as the “Hercules of the Police Department,” was the only officer directly killed by the earthquake.

Officer Fenner was killed at 138 Mason Street when the cornice and part of the upper wall fell on him. Fellow officers found him and, as Officer Max Behan later wrote, “He was buried under the pile of debris, and on top of the pile lay the body of a very lovely girl, stone dead. She had jumped out of a window five stories above, and was killed instantly.”
